The Impact of Education Attainment on the Well-Being of Chinese Residents: A Comparison of 2010 and 2015

Abstract

This paper examines the impact of educational attainment on Chinese happiness and the presence of mediating factors. This examination applied WLS regression and path analyses with data year of 2010 and 2015 the China General Social Survey (CGSS). This study finds that: (1) educational attainment has a positive effect on Chinese residents' happiness; there is also a mediating effect on income level and class perception. (2) The positive mediating effect of educational attainment on residents' happiness through income level decreases over time. (3) The positive mediating effect of educational attainment on residents' happiness through class perception increases over time. Lastly, some recommendations are put forward on how to reform Chinese education.
