The purpose of this study was to investigate beginning music teachers’ (BMTs) self-reported preparation for their first year (FY) of teaching using over twenty years of nationally representative data. BMTs reported the strongest FY preparation for teaching their subject matter, teaching to state content standards, and using a variety of instructional methods, and reported being less prepared for teaching students with special needs, classroom management, and teaching English language learners. Self-reported FY preparation was largely similar between the music teachers and the non-music teachers in the sample, with the music teachers reporting greater preparation in several job functions relative to teachers in other content areas. BMTs who pursued traditional certification reported dramatically stronger FY preparation during the pandemic.
