Decolonial Portals as a Pedagogical Tool

Abstract

Defined as a form of internalized oppression, colonial mentality (CM) among Filipinos and Filipino Americans is a multidimensional psychological construct that is a specific consequence of colonialism, characterized by a perception of ethnic and cultural inferiority (David & Okazaki, 2006). This critical bricolage study, drawing on multiple epistemologies and theoretical frameworks, interrogated CM among six Filipina educators using storytelling sessions and a design justice ideation session. A key finding reconceptualized CM as systemic, rather than an individual psychological construct. New ideas implicate decolonial work by educators and practitioners in political, economic, and sociocultural spheres, within and beyond the Philippines. The Decolonial Portals pedagogical tool can support educators and their students to imagine and create decolonial futures.
