Abstract

Research has shown that the parent plays an equally critical role in a student’s academic success and learning as the school itself. The most effective educational contexts for Latinx students seem to be those wherein the school and the parents exhibit a mutual awareness and commitment to each other’s goals. While there have been efforts designed to provide opportunities for parents to develop skills and tools, an important concern is that the messages that are conveyed through these efforts and the extent and ways in which these are affirming of diverse student cultures and communities and how they may actually contribute to deficit framing. This paper examines various programs aimed at supporting Latinx parents’ engagement in their children’s schooling.
