Conceptualizing Humanizing Reflective Pedagogy and Praxis

Thu, April 11, 10:50am to 12:20pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

This proposal contends dismantling racial injustice must involve humanizing pedagogies that propel the manifestation of new realities from the ways we engage a collective transformation. The theoretical framework grounding the study is Freire’s (2000) concept of praxis that integrates an ongoing practice of reflection and action to dismantle oppressive educational structures. Unique to this qualitative inquiry is the analysis of the ways the reading of college student reflections may advance the way faculty conceptualize and enact a humanizing reflective pedagogy, reconcile the cognitive dissonance between how we engage a humanizing reflective pedagogy in the classroom but not in other realms of Education, invigorate, dampen, or alter a professional praxis towards racial justice, and cultivate the imaginings of more racially just schools.
