Transforming Doctoral Student Mentorship Through Creative and Arts-Based Approaches

Fri, April 12, 11:25am to 12:55pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

Using creative methods and arts-based approaches, we explore mentorship relationships to understand the dynamics of developing and maintaining meaningful connections and support systems that interconnect our personal and professional lives. Highlighted are challenges from the sociopolitical, institutional, and cultural factors that impact the doctoral student experience and the mentorship relationship. Using critical thinking and creativity, arts-based representations (i.e., poetry, drawing, imagery) are used as standpoints and indicators for each of the generated themes: care and trust as foundational, discrepancies and commonalties, and empowerment and advocacy.
