This study explored how a research-practice partnership (RPP) between a university in the Southwest and a small rural school district serving Hispanic students centered equity in their work. The focus of this study is on the inner working of establishing a RPP and the initial research agenda setting process between a higher education institution and a rural school district. Utilizing pláticas (Fierros & Delgado Bernal, 2016), three main themes were revealed connected to how equity was centered in our selection of the topic: 1) turning a shared traumatic experience into purpose; 2) "The border is me."; and 3) "tensions in how our work is defined." Equity work in RPPs must begin with recognizing the full humanity of its partners.
