Toward a Transfer-Conocimiento Framework: Understanding How Latinx Transfer Students and Their Families Co-Construct Transfer Decisions

Sun, April 14, 3:05 to 4:35pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

The purpose of this systematic literature review was to investigate the transfer choice processes and experiences of Latinx community college students through a family-centered approach. Thirty-two peer-reviewed articles published between 2000-2022 were analyzed. Acevedo-Gil’s (2017) college-conocimiento framework was used as the premise for examination of the transfer decision making processes and experiences of Latinx community college students. Findings revealed that Latinx families were heavily involved in all seven stages of the transfer decision making process of their children and they worked together to co-construct these choices based on cultural and familial decision making. Implications of this work allows researchers to develop frameworks that better showcase the lived experiences of Latinx community college students and their families.
