Navigating the Digital Age: Insights From Taiwanese Parents on Children's ICT Usage

Abstract

This study surveyed 675 Taiwanese parents to investigate their young children's ICT usage, attitudes toward ICT, and the relationship between socioeconomic status and children's ICT use. Parents believed the most suitable age for children to start using ICT was after six years old, but over 80% of children already used ICT before reaching six. Rasch model analysis revealed that parents considered "cognitive learning" to positively impact children's ICT use, while their greatest concern was "addiction and overreliance." The findings highlight mixed perceptions among parents, with both positive and negative views on children's ICT usage. The study suggests that parents' attitudes towards technology are nuanced, shaped by the digital age's challenges and opportunities. The study proposes future research recommendations in this area.
