When implemented well, social-emotional learning (SEL) can positively affect positive school and classroom climates and individual student outcomes such as academic achievement, engagement, behavior, and mental health. However, implementing programs has many challenges, including time, training, and costs. We gathered the perspectives of school counselors, school and district administrators, and other mental health professionals regarding SEL in schools in one county by conducting in-depth interviews two times during the 2022-23 school year. The results illuminate the patterns and trends for SEL implementation and suggest recommendations for educational leaders to affect youth social and emotional skill development positively.
