River Crossings of Our Childhood: Nezuko and Yasmine Dis/Orient Computing Education

Sun, April 14, 11:25am to 12:55pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

We present the work of two immigrant youth of color, Nezuko and Yasmine, who re-design and reimagine an existing computational model that is entrenched in colonial ideologies. We adopt a grounded theoretical method and conduct a constant comparative analysis of the computational artifacts co-designed with the participants and the conversations between the participants and the facilitators. Our analysis identifies ethical-affective design turns in their interactions that led to crucial reorientations to the existing code and interface of the computational model. These reorientations offer a contrapuntal imagination of designing and theorising of techno-scientific learning spaces.
