The Math Is Not Mathing: The Impact of Historical Residential Segregation on Latinx Mathematics Course Taking in High School

Sun, April 14, 7:45 to 9:15am, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 100, Room 113B

Abstract

This study examines some of the structural processes that contribute to the disproportionately low enrollment of Latinx students in secondary advanced mathematics courses, postsecondary enrollment and postsecondary enrollment in STEM degree programs. More precisely, this proposed project will investigate the impact of historic residential segregation and present-day gentrification on advanced mathematics course availability on Latinx students’ outcomes across historically divested neighborhoods in the United States.
