Thu, April 11, 12:40 to 2:10pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall A

Abstract

Young children (age 8 and below) with developmental and behavioral disabilities often face emotional, psychological and physical health challenges when facing transitions between education programs. Child health clinicians play a major role in diagnosing developmental and behavioral disabilities, helping children and their families navigate the education transitions, and coordinating care between education and child health professionals. The purpose of this study was to explore child health clinicians’ perspectives on transitions between education programs for children age 8 and younger with developmental disabilities. Twenty-five pediatric clinicians participated in semi-structured interviews. Based on thematic analysis, results revealed the importance of communication between education and health care professionals; challenges navigating education systems; family, and systemic issues.
