Hermeneutic phenomenological researchers not only need to have a sound methodological knowledge, but also need to understand the philosophical assumptions behind it. In this article, we shall develop an account of Heideggerian hermeneutic phenomenological research methodology. To achieve this goal, we shall first explicate phenomenological and hermeneutic philosophy by drawing heavily on Heidegger’s work Being and Time. Second, we shall articulate in detail the hermeneutic phenomenological methodology which is firmly rooted in Heidegger’s philosophy. Following that, we shall borrow a raw experiential description and analyze it to demonstrate the application of our articulated data analysis method. Finally, we shall discuss validity, reliability, and generalization of hermeneutic phenomenological research.
