Understanding How Latina Ph.D. Student Mothers “Negotiated” Choosing Between Familia and Academia During the Pandemic (Poster 4)

Fri, April 12, 3:05 to 4:35pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall A

Abstract

An in-depth analysis is needed to understand Latina student mothers’ doctoral experiences, unique family challenges, and the type of support they acquired to succeed holistically during the COVID-19 pandemic. Based on two rounds of semi-structured interviews, Latina participants shared key moments when they felt forced in choosing between their motherhood and doctoral student responsibilities, which induced heavy stress on their physical and mental wellness. Recommendations will encourage graduate programs and faculty to better identify and allocate more institutional resources to Latina doctoral student mothers and dismantle racial injustices embedded within their institutional policies that negatively impact degree completion.
