This study explores the effects of outdoor adventure education (OAE) on middle school students' motivation (self-efficacy, self-regulation, emotions) and coping strategies (risk assessment and resilience). This work aims to iteratively design and test the effectiveness of an OAE after-school program in facilitating motivation and resilience using a mixed methods approach. Nine eighth-grade students participated in a five-week after-school OAE program, and qualitative coding revealed potential positive outcomes for the intervention. By recognizing the challenges faced by middle-school age children, educators may be able to use OAE to provide appropriate instruction to foster healthy mental and social development.
