This study examines the design of an applied residency program designed to develop graduate students’ proficiency in learning experience design practice. Situated within a graduate certificate, we analyze the residency program against the Developing Instructional Designers Though Apprenticeship (DIDA) model. Summative content analysis of four course artifacts reveal 32 references to learning opportunities in line with the DIDA model, including ten references to Observation and Modeling, eight to Tasks with Coaching, five to Contextualized Practice, and nine to Reflection and Exploration. We discuss implications for alignment to the DIDA model and posit alterations that could enhance students’ development of learning experience design proficiency within the certificate.
