Factors Affecting Learning and Inequities: Designing Progress Monitoring Software for Schools

Sat, April 13, 7:45 to 9:15am, Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, Floor: Level 5, Salon I

Abstract

AvenuePM is a web-based progress monitoring software designed to help teachers monitor the progress of students who are learning American Sign Language (ASL) or English. Teachers use AvenuePM to administer assessments based on Curriculum-based Measurement (CBM) principles and track student achievement levels. However, studies suggest that student achievement levels vary by student type, class profiles, type of feedback, etc. The study aims to identify factors affecting student achievement levels and learning inequities. By analyzing data of teachers and students in grades K-6, independent variables related to students and assessments were used to predict students’ achievement levels. Preliminary analysis suggests disability or gender does not seem to affect student progress levels. However, students’ ability of spoken English may affect progress levels.
