“Much Is Up to the Listener”: New Teachers Engaging Authentic Literacy in an Indigenous Pedagogy Framework

Sun, April 14, 7:45 to 9:15am, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

“Grow your own” teacher education programs in tribal communities serve as important pipelines for staffing reservation schools and also serve as hubs for innovation in Indigenous curriculum and pedagogy. One example of such innovation is an Indigenous Pedagogy Framework (IPF) (Running Wolf, 2023), which was developed to guide teachers to attend to what, why, and how for indigenous teaching and learning. In this initial inquiry, authors examined how Indigenous teacher candidates utilized the IPF—with a close eye on the authentic literacy component. Content analysis was conducted on 17 learning plans across two semesters. Findings show a wide breadth of authentic literacy practices and notable growth in pedagogy and candidates’ cultural and literacy leadership over time.
