Individual, Leadership, and Organizational Factors That Influence Faculty Adoption of Mid-Course Feedback on Instruction

Thu, April 11, 2:30 to 4:00pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

A structured mid-course feedback on instruction (MCFI) is an educational innovation that promotes positive change in teaching and learning (Diamond, 2004). This presentation reports findings of a mixed-methods study to examine the influence of individual, leadership, and organizational factors on faculty adoption of MCFI at a large, public university. Study findings indicate that although individual and leadership factors influenced faculty decisions to participate in MCFI, organizational factors (particularly supportive social and academic networks) were critical in facilitating reflection, meaning making, and efforts to change teaching practice. This study highlights the value of MCFI in fostering students’ sense of belonging and addressing barriers to student learning, well-being, and academic success.
