Critical consciousness can be a powerful tool for dismantling systemic oppression, regarding injustices toward race, gender, ability, or socioeconomic status. However, it is often overlooked that measurements developed to aid critical consciousness research and support critical consciousness development in youth, may not apply equally to all youths, particularly those from different social or ethnic-racial groups. This study contemplates how measurements can be perceived variably by respondents of different group memberships, and consequently yield misleading results, by conducting a critical content analysis of critical consciousness measurement items to construe underlying assumptions of power, oppression, and critical action. By illuminating possible biases in the tools that guide our work, the study informs the future development, application, and interpretation of critical consciousness measurements.
