Queering Environmental Education Through Birding: Intersectional Discourses of Care and Belonging

Sun, April 14, 3:05 to 4:35pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

This ethnographic research focuses on ways that safe spaces are being provided for youth who have been historically excluded from opportunities to learn about birds in urban habitats. Moreover, this study explores how grassroots, environmental groups facilitate engagement in local environmental action. This presentation explores how two informal environmental organizations connect with BIPOC youth to create safe spaces for learning. This study seeks to understand how youth of diverse backgrounds, ages 18-30, come to be involved in learning about their urban environment and become active in social and environmental action.
