This paper uses a phenomenological approach to explore the experiences of three Academic Diversity Officers (ADOs) who participated in the National Association of Diversity Officers in Higher Education (NADOHE) pilot Academic Diversity Officers Fellows Program. The ADOs share how their fellowship experience impacted their approach to addressing issues of race and racism in their respective institutions. Specific attention is given to how the current assault on diversity initiatives at higher education institutions across the country impacted each ADOs ability to implement an anti-racist agenda in their specific context. The ADOs share how the support and mentorship they received from their ADO mentors challenged them to constantly re-evaluate their roles and responsibilities.
