Abstract

This interdisciplinary research team have recently updated the Life on the Edge game by adding theoretically motivated and learning supportive game features during the last academic year. We will share how we have applied the Basic Psychological Need theory to redesign the serious video game and present our findings of quasi-experimental study conducted in Spring 2023. Overall, this study provides the empirical evidence on the positive effects of using the serious video game as one of the course materials on behavioral and emotional engagement. Also, this study found that the students in the experimental group were less behaviorally disengaged in their learning.
