In this paper, we present the MOSAIC protocol (Moment of Support Analysis in Classrooms), which revolves around the concept of ‘support moment’, i.e. a moment where students receive support or assistance from others. Our protocol aims to identify and understand such support moments, examining who initiates and provides the support, the type of support given, and student behavior before and after the support moment. Our paper discusses the development of the protocol as well as presents preliminary results when it was applied to a dataset of student collaboration and our reliability work. We believe this protocol will help provide a more comprehensive understanding of support provided during student collaborative learning, and help inform the design of AI-partners for facilitating classroom collaboration.
