The wave of state sanctioned killings of Blacks across the United States, which were exemplified and magnified by the May 25, 2020, murder of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police catalyzed national and international movements challenging anti-Black racism. These movements intensified demands for historically White colleges and universities to dismantle systems of race-based oppression, and ignited a renewed sense of urgency to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice efforts. This paper presents preliminary findings of a larger study of 100 selective public research universities by examining the responses of 30, offering insight into whether and how such higher education institutions are dismantling racial injustice and constructing educational possibilities.
