To address these gaps in our knowledge about the work of female faculty and graduate students of color in academia, we conducted a narrative inquiry into the experiences of female faculty and advanced graduate students of color to learn about complexities at the intersections of professional and personal responsibilities. We examined their experiences as they fulfill professional responsibilities while also working to instill in their children knowledge of and appreciation for their family’s culture and language. We borrowed Bhattacharya and Payne’s(2016) term, “transnational woman of color in US higher education” to capture nuances of our experiences in higher education, given that the term ‘woman of color’ did not seem to adequately describe the many facets of these experiences.
