This grant-funded study examines wellness practices—or lack thereof—of Black women principals in Detroit. In March 2020, Michigan’s shelter in place orders moved students, teachers, parents, and leaders to online platforms in response to the coronavirus. Across the nation, students’ mental and emotional wellbeing became a priority. Some researchers focused on teachers and other staff, yet few examined school leaders. Black women leaders are faced with unique challenges that impact their overall leadership experiences. The Leading Well grant-funded model sought redress for racial inequities Black Women Detroit school leaders experience with the creation of a professional learning community dedicated to wellness ideology and practices.
