Repaying Debts to Black and Brown Teachers Through Transnational Teaching Opportunities

Fri, April 12, 9:35 to 11:05am, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 100, Room 111A

Abstract

This study explores the impact of a transnational teaching exchange program on the pedagogical values and practices of students of Color. Participants engaged in virtual and in-person visits to PK-12 schools committed to intensive Spanish-English bilingual education, based in Concepción and Santiago, Chile. We provide a qualitative analysis of participants’ prompted reflections which they submitted across the program. We argue that through their reflexive writings, participants demonstrated 1) transnational purviews on the importance teachers of Color for students in the U.S. and in the Global South; 2) the value of multilingualism and cultural sustainment in developing humanizing transnational relationships; and 3) growing confidence in their ability to enhance the education of students outside of and in the United States.
