This research utilized a place-based community engagement framework with sport-based youth development to bring STEM and soft skill learning opportunities to underserved youth. Prior research has shown that even when students study STEM majors at a university, they are lacking soft skills upon graduation. This study sought to close that gap through exploring an innovative mechanism for youth to learn STEM concepts and acquire requisite soft skills for STEM careers. The research took place at a local community center and used sport as the vehicle for learning. Our findings indicated that sport is a viable mechanisms to engage youth with STEM and acquire soft skills.
