Self-Actualization and Health in Entrada de Colegio: A Precollegiate Program

Sat, April 13, 9:35 to 11:05am, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

Latine/x students in the Entrada de Colegio Program are committed to exploring their mental health. Trusting the researchers in focus group testimonios, they truth-tell about their mental health and substance use. Divulging their mental health influences on educational pathways, the students interrogate dominant hegemonic educational systems. Using Community Cultural Wealth, and CRT, the authors listen to student stories about their racialized and intersectional identities implicated in a society filled with inequities. The students are catalysts of change as they grow, heal, and aspire within their vulnerabilities to resist, challenge and confront societal and educational oppressions such as racism, sexism, and classism. Generating authentic spaces, through experiential knowledge and truth-telling, students unearth insights to define their cultural wealth and comunidad (community).
