Data from the 2019 NAEP High School Transcript Study (HSTS) was used to investigate the correlation between advanced mathematics courses and NAEP mathematics achievement among high school graduates. The study found that students who took advanced mathematics classes achieved higher average scores on the mathematics assessment, regardless of gender, race/ethnicity, or school minority status. Female students slightly outperformed male students at all course levels. The trend of a positive effect of advanced mathematics courses completed on mathematics achievement was consistent across ethnic groups. Schools with high minority status reported a lower average mathematics score than those with low and medium minority status.
