Abstract

The Olaniyan Scholars Program is an undergraduate research program established in 2007. Initially, the program didn’t even have a name. The guidelines and definitions for the program that were given at the time were not very specific in terms of how the program should be structured and operated on a daily basis. Scholars in the program would meet regularly not only with their faculty mentors but also with their peers. Further, as the program developed over time, it would also ask juniors and seniors to help with the mentoring of first-year and sophomore students. Each student was/is assigned to assist the work of one of our community partners focused on engaging the African American communities of central Indiana.
