Lighting the Way Toward Liberation

Thu, April 11, 12:40 to 2:10pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Room 201B

Abstract

The Office of Equity at SDP views “equity” as means to cultivate prosperity and liberation for students and staff, starting with historically marginalized populations, by removing barriers, increasing access and inclusion, building trusting relationships, and creating a shared culture of social responsibility and commitment to organizational accountability. For this panel, she will focus on how a school system can use the “burns” of the past as lessons to learn moving forward. These are her three core areas: what the people who lead and teach need to know and be able to do; how to engage the systems and structures the people lead to move from the knowing to the doing; and guiding the knowing by creating policy rooted in equity and holding people accountable practices that align with equity-centered policies. Dr. Jubilee seeks to focus on systemic-change across these three core areas while seeking to rebuild an organization that is operating in the shadows of White Supremacist Ideology. While our AERA 2014 symposium focused on school closures, Dr. Jubilee’s focus now is on the way SDP does business as a whole and the impact that has on schools.
