Abstract

Despite deficit-laden research and the impact of racism on Black students in American public schools, many Black adolescent males have been academically successful (Oyserman, Grant, & Ager, 1995; Smith & Hope, 2020; Williams et al., 2019; Wright, 2011). This study provided a means to understand the voices and experiences of academically successful Black adolescent males through the lens of Phenomenological Variant of Ecological Systems (PVEST). PVEST allows for understanding the strengths and assets associated with Black adolescent male identity formation and how they cope with racism within their school environment (Lee et al., 2003). The study explored the phenomena of race and racism of academically successful Black adolescent males within the school context.
