Recently, the nation has seen intensive adult efforts to limit students’ learning about race and LGBTQ experiences in U.S. schools. What say youth themselves? We tap seven youth interviews from six states with restrictive legislation/policy passed and proposed. We put youth voices directly in conversation with their state’s legislation. Youth described specific desires for learning and support in school, many of which hinged on desired dialogues about perspectives, experiences, facts, and history. They also indicated how such desires to learn and belong were threatened or directly hampered by adult efforts to restrict race- and LGBTQ-related school talk. We came to view restriction efforts as potentially denying students school access to the very conversations and learning supports they crave.
