Abstract

In this study, YouTube videos concerning refugees were identified and evaluated. Researchers typed “refugees” into the YouTube search bar and then analyzed the first 30 videos provided by the site. Authors independently coded the relevant videos as either negative, neutral, or positive in light of the following question: “Are refugees portrayed in this video in a negative, neutral, or positive manner?” The theory of social construction of reality provided the theoretical framework for the study, and results were discussed through the lenses provided by this theory. Results showed that half of the videos were positive about refugees. Findings of this study will provide informative suggestions for critical peace education to enhance the positive portrait of refugees in the media.
