Abstract

The mixed-method study revealed how amateur tango dancers use self-directed learning (SDL) strategies to learn Argentine tango. Survey data was collected from 351 amateur tango dancers and 21 individual interviews were conducted. The results of the analysis suggested that challenge tasks can serve as both a strong motivator for learning that trigger self-management of partnership-based resources in a dialogical dance context. One-to-one feedback functions as both a self-management resource and a self-monitoring tool. Findings of SDL strategies used in serious leisure learning revealed methods to assist learners to establish general self-efficacy in other forms of learning, overcome learning challenges, and nurture lifelong learning.
