Abstract

As the demand grows for Mandarin Dual Language Immersion (DLI) programs, so follows the need for effective principals as DLI leaders. In response to a needs-assessment of school districts, a county office of education and a university partnered to design a quantitative study of Mandarin DLI principals across the state of California. This project identified supports that exist and those needed for prospective and current principals of Mandarin DLI schools. Preliminary data analysis revealed a lack of targeted capacity-building opportunities for principals of Mandarin DLI programs. Analysis further illuminated a need for state and federal agencies, in partnership with institutions of higher education, to create avenues for coaching and mentorship specifically to nurture and develop DLI instructional leadership skills.
