The aim of this paper is to reveal the news media’s portrayal of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in higher education teaching and learning and the underlying assumptions upholding the portrayal. With a critical discourse analysis, three themes emerged in the news discourse of AI in teaching and learning in higher education: a universally applicable technology, technology that frees up educators, and technology that higher education must embrace. In addition, I uncover assumptions underlying these conceptualizations. Considering culturally relevant teaching, disciplinary context, and risks of technology determinism, I argue that the portrayal of AI in higher education teaching and learning by news discourse needs to be interrogated and dismantled.
