This presentation draws on my dissertation research on assets-based pedagogies in museums through a case study of the Hmong Museum in Minnesota. It explores education in museums through the framework of Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy (Paris & Alim, 2014) and Culturally Disruptive Pedagogy (San Pedro, 2018). I examine how the museum's mission and vision of preserving the HMong culture and history is embodied through educators, artists, volunteers, storytellers, and the evolving definition of culture. The significance of this study expands and deepens the understanding of teaching and learning in museums from the curriculum, programming, and facilitation through assets-based pedagogies to foster and sustain the multitude of cultural identities, languages, and knowledge.
