Learning Centres' Impact on Literacy Development: Perspectives of Effutu Municipal Kindergarten Teachers

Abstract

Learning centers have emerged as valuable active learning tools when utilized effectively. This case study examined Effutu municipal kindergarten teachers' perspectives on the contribution of learning centers to early grade literacy development. Employing quota and purposive sampling, 15 teachers across three local education circuits were selected for semi-structured interviews investigating the research questions. Teachers expressed excellent understanding and positive perceptions of the importance of learning centers in building young learners' literacy skills. They believe effective learning center use enables significant independent development. However, teachers identified large class sizes, insufficient resources, excessive noise, and hyperactivity as impediments. Recommendations include municipal officials and headteachers ensuring the availability of adequately resourced learning centers, considering classroom sizes before admissions to minimize overcrowding, and supervising implementation.
