"Belonging Across Borders: A Study on Student Characteristics and Motivations in High School International Exchange Programs"

Fri, April 12, 4:55 to 6:25pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Room 204ABC

Abstract

This study addresses the gap in research on homestay-based international student exchanges for secondary students (15-18 years old), focusing on the Eastern States Student Exchange Program (ESSEX). Applying the Theory of Belonging, the study delves into how a sense of belonging shapes students' motivations, integration processes, and overall outcomes. The research questions are designed to unravel the characteristics of ESSEX participants, explore the factors influencing their decision to engage in the program, assess the impact on participating students, and compare responses between short- and long-term program participants. The study's scholarly significance lies in informing the design of youth international student exchange programs, promoting inclusivity, and influencing educational policies.
