Middle School Students' Conceptions of Environmental Civic Issues

Fri, April 12, 4:55 to 6:25pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Room 204ABC

Abstract

This research in progress centers on students' conceptions of civic environmental issues and exploring them, as well as their methods of civic engagement and practice. This project is part of a larger design-based research project exploring students' civic engagement in an urban middle school in the US South. We are analyzing students' understanding and opinions of the most pressing environmental threats in their communities and how they relate, contribute or engage with these issues currently. The work would contribute to the environmental education and social studies fields' understanding of how students' emerging civic practices and identity can serve as platform to voice their opinions, furthering their civic engagement.
