Perceived Social Support of Bullied Adolescents: A Mixed-Method Study

Sat, April 13, 11:25am to 12:55pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Room 204ABC

Abstract

Most studies on bullied adolescents' social support concentrate on the independent effects of individual sources of social support, despite the fact that adolescents' development is shaped by the joint effects of multiple sources of support. Hence, it remains unclear how multiple sources of support corresponds with victims' outcomes from a holistic perspective. Moreover, many studies on bullied adolescents' social support rely on quantitative approaches using standardized measures, which may constrain our understanding of victims' subjective experiences of the support received. This study used a mixed-method design to identify bullied adolescents' perceived social profiles across five sources (i.e., parents, teachers, classmates, close friends, and online communities) and investigate how they subjectively experience different sources of social support.
