This study explores the academic transition of freshmen in China's elite research universities. It adopts a longitudinal qualitative approach to investigate how these students prepare for, understand, and experience their first year in these prestigious institutions. The research seeks to identify key patterns in students' transition phases and the impact of high school experiences on their academic transition. The study highlights the significant psychological strain and diverse experiences encountered by students during this transition. It also examines the role of high schools and universities in shaping these experiences. By understanding these dynamics, the study aims to contribute to the broader discourse on academic transition in the context of Chinese secondary and higher education context.
