Session Type: Symposium
Since 2020, the nation has seen a wave of nationally networked, politically driven efforts to limit what students can learn in U.S. schools about race, gender, sexual identity, diversity, and history, via a mix of state legislation, conservative media, school board directives, and local agitation. We/colleagues have called these efforts a “conflict campaign” (Authors et al, 2022, 2023), given their strategic and coordinated attempt to stoke anger and division about public schools. In this symposium session, a team focused on studying these recent efforts to restrict school learning will share data, then engage the audience in small-group dialogue about national examples gathered in four studies. Then, we will discuss audience members’ own recent experiences with such restriction efforts.
