Session Type: Symposium
In this panel, we examine several avenues to studying school safety from different theoretical, methodological, and disciplinary perspectives. These papers present the different ways in which school safety research is approached from policing and gun violence prevention to bullying and policy analysis. By understanding school safety within the broader notion of school climate and culture, these papers provide evidence-informed perspectives for how to ensure schools can be safe for children across disparate school communities. This collective work provides empirical and conceptual support for identifying and addressing the disproportionate experiences of students and families of color in the effort of creating safer schools. Implications for school policy, practices, programming, and engagement with children and their families are discussed.
