Session Type: Symposium
Qualitative researchers have long involved participants in research in diverse and creative ways. One reason for such work is “member checking”—a way to establish ecological validity. In the past decade, video-based researchers have also begun to consider the ethical validity of engaging participants in video analysis—the potential to more equitably distribute research resources and attend to participants’ learning and contributions. In this symposium, we aim to explore the possibilities of positioning participants in educational research (youth, teacher candidates, families, in-service teachers) as co-researchers in video-based analysis. We will consider the generative possibilities for participants’ learning in their own fields, as well as their novel and generative contributions as co-researchers to develop more ecologically and ethically valid research.
