Session Type: Symposium
While the politics of education fundamentally considers how power shapes educational access and practice, this symposium considers the shifting political dynamics of democratic education amid the political polarization of recent years (Diliberti & Schwartz, 2022; Journell, 2022). This symposium features six papers that grapple with the implications of recent battles in school buildings, district meetings, and legislative chambers (Jochim et al., 2023). To understand the ways these heated political battles affect democratic education, the symposium draw on Bronfennbrenner’s ecological framework (1979, 2005) to consider the complex environment that schools exist in as they attempt to craft equitable schools (Bishop & Noguera, 2019), foster democratic participation, and support the development of democratic citizens (Author, 2018).
